Report of IIHF 2013

Handloom Export Promotion Council under Market Access Initiative (MAI) Scheme of Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India organized the third edition of India International Hand-woven Fair (IIHF) during March 5-7, 2013 at Chennai Trade Centre, Nadambakkam, Chennai, Tamilnadu. Council had conceptualised IIHF to show case “Brand India” products and identify sustainable marketing solutions for Handloom sector. IIHF provided an ideal platform to put on display many different products, which comprised Hand-woven commodities from all parts of the country, such as Home textiles, Fashion accessories, Jute, Handicrafts etc.

The fair was inaugurated by Shri. Balvinder Kumar, I.A.S., Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India on 05th March, 2013 in the presence of the guest of honour Shri. G.Santhanam, Secretary (Handlooms, Handicrafts, Textiles & Khadi), Govt. of Tamilnadu. Dignitaries from the State and Central Government and eminent persons from industry participated at the inaugural function. During the occasion, Development Commissioner for Handlooms released the Fair Guide prepared for the event.

IIHF theme pavilion “Celebrating Handlooms… The woven legacy of India” brought the quaint woven impressions from traditional India to the modern resort and summer look. Textile installations added flavour to the event with colourful fusion of concept and design. Assam Theme pavilion developed by the Department of Handlooms and Textiles, showcasing the rich heritage of handlooms in the state of Assam with demo on Loin looms attracted all the foreign buyers and exhibitors. Theme pavilion designed by West Bengal with demonstration of weaving Jamdani attracted the visitors and showed them the intricacies involved in the process.

IIHF truly evolved as a vibrant meeting point for 98 overseas Buyers and 200 domestic exhibitors. Overseas Buyers from USA, UK, Australia, Germany, Sweden, Poland, Belgium, Italy, Finland, Canada, Colombia, Chile, Russia, Japan, South Africa, Mauritius, Slovakia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Taiwan, Serbia, Zimbabwe, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Ghana, Morocco and Israel participated in the event.

Domestic participant exhibitors from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Uttar pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, West Bengal, New Delhi, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Kashmir, Bihar, Punjab, Nagaland, Manipur and Assam displayed products unique in technique, design and craftsmanship reflecting the diversity, depth and spirit of Indian Handlooms.

Added attractions at the IIHF included live demonstration of Handloom weaving, Block printing and Kalamkari craft. Visiting Buyers appreciated the rich heritage of Indian Handloom products and opined that these events were an eye-opener for many of them.

A cultural show “Nrityahaar – Celebrating Life” to showcase the woven legacy of India-‘Handlooms’ in its adaptation from Traditional to Modern” was performed by Leela Samson, Bragha Bassel and celebrated dancers on 5th March, 2013.  Dr. S. Sundararaj, Hon’ble Minister for Handlooms & Textiles, Govt. of Tamilnadu was the Chief Guest for the event.

A Fashion show depicting the Indian Handlooms from its traditional beginning to contemporary usage was performed by the models with the collection of the designers Mr. Chaitanya Rao, Ms. Neesha Amrish, Mr. Dhiraj Deka on 6th March, 2013.

Hon’ble Minister for Handlooms and Textiles, Assam, Ms. Pranati Phukan visited the fair on 7th March, 2013 and appreciated the efforts of HEPC for organising such event for the benefit of handloom sector.

Feedback session was arranged on 07th March 2013, to solicit the comments from buyers for further improvement. Some of the feedbacks are

  • Competent and decision making personnel available in the stalls
  • Responses from exhibitors were found good. Immediate response with regard to the quotes and samples was highly appreciated
  • Cultural show and fashion show nicely arranged

  • To continue this fair to keep the handloom in future
  • Appreciable to bring all types of Handloom products suppliers under one roof
  • Opportunity to move away from buying agents and contact the direct manufacturers

The third edition of IIHF has fetched spot orders worth Rs 2.81 Crores and concrete enquiries to the tune of Rs 16.17 Crores. The next edition of India International Handwoven Fair (IIHF) is proposed to be held from 12th to 14th March, 2014 at the same venue.
